“All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light
of a single candle.”
~ St. Francis of Assisi
Mindful of our Franciscan roots, St. Francis of Assisi
Catholic Elementary school recognizes and nourishes the
divine light in all our students. Founded in 1895, we have
been offering academically challenging curriculum that
serves the spiritual, intellectual, emotional, social and
physical needs of students. With our outstanding instruction
in core subjects, St. Francis students have consistently
scored well above the national and diocesan averages on the
ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) standardized testing.
Religious instruction expands beyond the classroom when
students are actively involved in prayer services and class
led Masses. Foreign languages, competitive academic and
religious based decathlons, PAL sports, Performing Arts,
after school library & computer lab, along with a variety of
clubs, provide our students with a knowledgeable, well
rounded education. Students in need of before or after
school care enroll in our Extension Program which provides
professional supervision and a rich diversity of activities
designed to complement the mission and philosophy of our
school.
Centrally located in the heart of historic mid-town, we
invite you to come and experience the spiritual light of St.
Francis of Assisi Elementary.

| | | The Prayer of Saint Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is doubt, faith; And where there is sadness, joy. O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, As to console; To be understood, as to understand; To be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
